Energy monitor compatible with Tellstick net?

Post by Timwansdyke »

Hi, does anyone know of an electrical energy monitor that will send instantaneous readings that a tellsticknet will pick up?
I have solar panels on my house and would like to be able to switch (say) the immersion heater on when the power generated by the solar panels is above a certain level.
I have two Owl usb monitors, one that measures the amount generated by the solar panels and one that monitors what the house is using. I can download the data to my PC but would like to set up so that I can either use the boiler or the immersion heater depending on how sunny it is. The Owl units use 433mHz signals as I understand it but the tellstick does not pick these up.
I have three temperature sensors and have set up a frost protection which turns the heating on and off by interrupting the power to the thermostat with a Homeasy on/off unit and I have a switch in line for the Immersion heater that I can also control from the tellstick net.
I would also like to say that I have been delighted with the tellsticknet though I do find that the signal range is a bit hit and miss sometimes. Sometimes it can miss picking up one or more of the temperature sensors for several hours.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Not sure what you ask, but Foogadgets sensors has been supported since a long time back.

I'm about to order a foogadget pulse counter but have three questions:

- is a lightsensor included in the kit?

- I dont have any power outlets where the power meter is, it's outdoors in a metal box. Can I run the pulse counter on battery, and if so what should I use and how long would it last?

- since my power meter is inside a shielding metal box on the outside of the house I guess the pulse counter radio signal might not reach the Tellstick? Is this solvable and if so how?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, you can run it with batteries. three cells, total 4,5volt should work.
I'm afraid you will "kill" it with 4 cells, 6volt.

I have mine in a metal box, no problem, but it depends of course of the distance.

Arne is correct.
Light sensor is included. Mail me at foogadgets and I will try to help you with the right solution for you.

Great, I'll place an order and then run it on one of the now so common phone recharge battery packs. There are ones with huge mAh :)

You don't happen to live in Stockholm? Thought I could pickup one quickly, got itchy fingers to try it out hehehe.

All setups are different. It could work, but could also not work. If it is an option for you to have only the phototransistor inside the cabinet, it will for sure work.
Mail me and I am sure I can come up with a solution for you.

No, it works on "wrong" frequency.

I have used FooGadgets for a few days now and seems to work great.
