Raspberry Pi & Tellstick

Post by Half-Dead »

Hello guys!

I have recently bought an original Tellstick (the small old blue one) to use with my Raspberry Pi model B along with a couple of HomeEasy plug sockets. I would like to get this working so that when I enter a command, the tellstick will be able to switch the sockets on and off. After a bit of internet searching I came across what I thought was an easy to follow guide. Link here at http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Tellstick_core.

I followed the guide but unfortunately when I try to start the telldusd service and view it's status (as detailed in this guide) nothing happens. The CLI just goes to the next line and simply displays nothing. When I say nothing I do get the usual 'Pi@Raspberrypi ~ $' symbol but nothing else telling me that the service has started successfully or anything. Despite this rather puzzling problem, I still carried on with this guide right to the end. When I test my tellstick using the "tdtool --on 3" command I get no joy (The ID of my plug socket is set at 3 in the config file). The relay doesn't switch and I am greeted with an error message that reads something along the lines of "could not connect to the Telldus service".

Background Information

I am running the latest version of Raspbian Debian Wheezy that is in the downloads section on the Raspberry Pi Website (Kernal Version 3.18)
I used the nano text editor to edit my config files.
I have used both the sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade commands to ensure everything is up to date.
I have no previous knowledge of Linux before buying this Raspberry Pi
I'm starting to lose the will to live and may throw this Raspberry Pi thing in the bin before too long

Thankyou in advance

I also bought a RPI and a Tellstick Duo and some Nexa plugs last week, I have actually got it all to work :)

I read this guide https://blogg.itslav.nu/?p=875 (but it is in Swedish, perhaps you can google translate it). At step 7 it tells you how to connect your plugs with your tellstick. Did you run "tdtool -e 3" first to connect the plug with the tellstick?

No. I have only done what it says in this guide. http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Tellstick_core

When are you supposed to run that tool? I did edit the config file with nano and add the devices I need though.

If you have a selflearning device, when the device is in "learning mode" you run tdtool -e 3 for example if it is device 3.
Not sure exactly how it works with your devices but with Nexa plugs there is a button you press and it goes into learning mode.

I am using HomeEasy (I am from the U.K) and there is a button for learning mode just like you are describing. My issue though has nothing to do with learning the devices. My Telldusd service will not start when using the guide posted above :(
This is the only english-speaking guide I can find though.

I would try this guide google translated since it worked perfect for me:

Thanks for the link. I appear to be stuck on step 4. I have typed in "sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/telldus.list" and it has opened a blank file in the text editor with no lines of text. I don't know what it means though when it says add kälkodskälla in your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/telldus.list. does this mean I add "deb-src http://download.telldus.com/debian/ stable main" as the first and only line in the document or just the word "kälkodskälla".

I added "deb-src http://download.telldus.com/debian/ stable main" in the nano document because that sounded like the most sensible idea. However on the next step when downloading the key I type in "wget http://download.telldus.se/debian/telldus-public.key" but this gives me an error. gpg: can't open Teldus-public.key: No such file or directory.

Thanks in advance

It is correct that telldus.list file should contain:
deb-src http://download.telldus.com/debian/ stable main

Maybe google translate mess up some commands? I noticed it made a capital T on Telldus which isn't correct.

It should be:
wget http://download.telldus.se/debian/telldus-public.key
And then
sudo apt-key add telldus-public.key

Perhaps you can compare the commands on the original site just to make sure they haven't been "translated" by Google.

As soon as I replaced the T in tellstick with a small t the guide was very useful. Thankyou for your help on this as I have now managed to get a few plug sockets working using the td--off and td--on commands. I will now be able to start on my web interface for this project :)

Have you managed to make a web interface for the commands? like when I click a button on an appachie based web page - It does a command i.e. td -- on 3 etc

Yeah I tried TellProx first and it worked but it's very simple.
I'm using HomeAutomation now (there is a section here in the forum for it) and it works great. But you need to install apache, php and mysql to get everything up and running and it can be tough if you never done it before, but there are lots of guides how to do that.
HomeAutomation can be downloaded here: http://karpero.mine.nu/ha

Thanks for the links. I have looked at the demo of home automation but i think it looks a bit too complex for my needs. I only have the Tellstick classic which does not input anything. I guess this means no temp sensors etc so all I can really do is turn stuff on and off. I do like the fact that it gives you a time when stuff was turned on and off though (which i suppose is why it needs SQL) I am thinking of creating my own basic page. I have no idea of hyperlinking to a command though so I might have to modify HA if i can't work out how to do it

Hi!

Have a look at NexaHome! You can download a complete image for Rpi.
At the end of the webpage you find the download section.
Image is in English. Support is exelent.
There is a section in this forum for NexaHome.
